At Oshtemo Family Dentistry, we prioritize patient care by following evidence-based guidelines. Our treatment policies ensure optimal oral health while making the most of available insurance benefits.
X-Ray Policy
We recommend X-rays based on individual patient risk factors and clinical needs to provide the highest standard of care. X-rays are an essential part of a comprehensive exam and diagnosis. X-rays are an essential part of a comprehensive exam and diagnosis. Without them, we cannot adequately assess oral health or provide appropriate treatment. While insurance coverage may not always align with these recommendations, we strive to maximize benefits whenever possible.
- Bitewing X-Rays: For most patients, bitewing X-rays are recommended annually. We require them at a minimum of once every two years. These X-rays are primarily used to detect cavities between the teeth and monitor bone levels that support the teeth. They help us identify issues early—often before symptoms arise—when treatment is most straightforward and effective.
- Panoramic Image or Full Mouth Series X-rays: Required at least once every five years. These comprehensive images provide a broader view of the oral and maxillofacial structures beyond what bitewings can show. A panoramic X-ray captures the entire mouth in a single image and is useful for evaluating impacted teeth, jaw joints, sinus areas, cysts, tumors, and other developmental anomalies. A full mouth series (FMX) includes a set of detailed images of each tooth and surrounding bone, which are especially valuable in diagnosing extensive decay, bone loss due to periodontal disease, and root or structural issues. These images are vital for early detection of more complex conditions and for long-term dental health planning.
- New Patients X-rays: We encourage new patients to request recent X-rays from their previous dental office. If these images are current and of diagnostic quality, we may be able to avoid retaking them. Patients are responsible for ensuring their records are sent to our office prior to their initial appointment. Under federal law, medical and dental records belong to the patient, and you have the right to request a copy. If we do not receive your X-rays by the time of your comprehensive exam, we will need to take new ones regardless of insurance coverage.
- Release of Records Form
- X-rays can be sent to [email protected]
- Lead Apron Policy: Following updated guidelines, we no longer routinely use lead aprons for dental X-rays. Research has shown that modern digital X-ray technology emits minimal radiation, and lead aprons do not provide additional protection. However, we still have lead aprons available upon request for patients who prefer to use them.
Exam Policy
- Routine dental exams are recommended every six months, but no less than once per year. If a patient has not been seen in our office for an extended period, a comprehensive exam will be required before resuming routine care. This ensures we have an up-to-date and complete understanding of your oral health.
- A comprehensive exam is required after 2 years of absence for patients with generally healthy teeth and gums and after 1 year of absence for patients with a history of periodontal disease or complex dental treatment needs.
- Patients who have not been seen in our office for 2 years or more will be inactivated in our system. We understand life happens! - Inactivated patients who are in good standing are always welcome to return to our practice.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in maintaining high-quality dental care for all our patients.
